It's been a long wait for a new Mafia game; it feels like it's been an age since Mafia 3 divided opinion. But does Mafia: The Old Country succeed in getting the largely beloved series back on track? That's for you to decide.
Sporting a a much more linear campaign than what was offered in Lincoln Clay's sandbox outing, The Old Country has been framed as a return to Mafia's roots. It is a prequel, after all, taking place before World War 1, in early 1900s Sicily.
The title was met with mostly positive reviews, with plenty of critics praising its presentation and well-acted storyline. But others took issue with its dated gameplay mechanics and predictable structure.
"Mafia: The Old Country doesn’t have enough gameplay ideas to carry its relatively short running time," is what we wrote in our own Mafia: The Old Country PS5 review.
We ended up calling it "a phenomenally acted crime tale that you may admire in the moment but will struggle to remember once the credits roll". In conclusion, a 'not bad' 6/10.
And for what it's worth, we did write up a full Mafia: The Old Country guide in case you need help tracking down the game's many collectibles.
A disappointing return for the franchise, then, but don't let us sway you. As always, we want you to select your own review score from the poll attached to this article, and then explain your choice to us in the comments section below.

Just finished it. Like 10 Minitues ago. Its easy an 8.
An outstanding story
Great set of characters
Gorgeous music
Topcotch world building
Fantastic performances of actors and actresses
Captivating dialogs
A highlight of the year and gen so far.
I need more Mafia.
And especially with that sneak peek of the ending.
MORE
I didn't like the knife battles and felt there was too many of them and it spoilt some of the momentum.
But decent story, nice setting and some great va.
Wished it was little longer story wise or that free roam had some more activities.
7/ 10 for me
It's a good 7, well done acting, delivery and story, just not as much action as I would like,.doesn't feel " gangster" as such alot of the time. It just felt like there was always more coming and then the end run hits you
Objectively a 7 but for me an 8, since we didn't have that kind of game for years
First good Mafia game
Awesome perfect length (9 hours, like Uncharted 2 and 3)
I rate it a 7/10, but it could easily be an 8/10 if it wasn’t for a few pacing issues.
I thought it was fantastic. I knew it was going to be a narrative focused game without all the open world fluff and story padding. I was not disappointed
I will hold on a bit for this as got a bit of a backlog but I think it's something I'm going to enjoy. Like linear games, like story heavy games. Love Uncharted and this seems like it plays a bit like Uncharted in parts
The same as Sammy 6 leaning towards 5 far from 7
Personally I'd give it an 8.
@JAMes-BroWWWn
TOTALLY AGREE!!!
Played it and here are my thoughts:
Soundtrack 9/10
Voice acting and performance 9/10
Graphics 7/10
Gameplay 5/10
Story/Ending 6/10
Overall 7/10
Just finished with my youngest. Jasper. It's a solid 5..people voting it higher are definitely easily pleased. If I didn't have such an affection for the franchise it would be a 3
A very attractive, but ultimately shallow experience.
Ended up giving this a go, and its a 8 for me (maybe a high 7).
I will add that this is on Pro - Had I been limited to base Base PS5, I would easily knock at least a point off as the graphics really add to the experience.
I have briefly played it on base PS5 (out of interest, as I have both in the household) and there is a very big difference indeed here.
Some people play this game wrong - much better to take it slow and enjoy all the little touches and conversations going on around you than rush through the storyline.
Voice acting and performances are excellent.
I would advise caution though - dont buy the game thinking its something its not, and it wont be for everyone.
I just noticed Push Square used a very similar subheading for both their Mafia 3 and Mafia: The Old Country reviews.
Mafia 3: "An offer you might want to refuse"
Mafia: The Old Country: "An offer you maybe can refuse"
I went with a 5/10.
It was the repetitiousness of following an NPC then some covered shooting and then "oh another knife fight when I clearly have a gun and can shoot this guy in the face" that made it feel like I was playing by numbers.
